Capcom admits Street Fighter V "Lacked Content" and "Needed More Polish"
-----------Capcom says they have learned valuable lessons from Street Fighter's shaky online launch, and that the company will change it's approach on developing games with more effort to make them "high-quality" for wider audience. Street Fighter V is Capcom's latest installment in the Street Fighter series, but it wasn't having a good start. There were issues on release such as server problems that led the game to receive poor reviews on Steam.
Capcom in a recent earnings presentation said that they modified it's operating income projections based on number of factors, including that the company wants to dedicate more time on the development. Street Fighter 5 was one of the mentioned titles that maybe suffered from this due to it's lack of "polish," said Capcom.
"[It]'s best to spend a little more time in developing and running a high-quality title that will perform well globally," Capcom said in a briefing. "For example, some aspects of 'Street Fighter V' needed more polish, such as the lack of content and server issues at launch. Accordingly, we feel it's better to give a little more time to development than before, and have made slight adjustments to our portfolio. Profits may take one or two years longer to stack up than initially expected, however we will be firmly strengthening our brands."
Capcom expects to generate 13.6 billion yen (around $127 million) in operating income for this fiscal year.
As of March 31, Street Fighter 5 has sold for more than 1.4 million copies for PlayStation 4 and PC, Capcom said that this was a soft initial start. Originally the company hoped to sell 2 million copies of the game during it's fiscal year.
Capcom released a number of updates, adding new characters and new gameplay modes for Street Fighter 5. Cinematic story mode is supposed to follow, which is said to arrive this June.
