Offline Mode Not an Option for Elite: Dangerous
-----------Elite: Dangerous' offline mode would be "unacceptably limited and static."
A new announcement via the latest newsletter, Frontier Developments' David Braben says that Elite: Dangerous won't be getting its planned offline mode.
"Going forwards, being online lets us constantly both curate and evolve the galaxy, with stories unfolding according to the actions of commanders," writes Braben.
"Exploration is also a key factor, too, and it is important that what a single player explores matches what other players explore whether single or multiplayer – a complex, coherent world – something we have achieved. Galaxy, story, missions, have to match, and it does mean the single player has to connect to the server from time to time, but this has the added advantage that everyone can participate in the activities that can happen in the galaxy. A fully offline experience would be unacceptably limited and static compared to the dynamic, ever unfolding experience we are delivering."
Braben also revealed that at launch players will have access to 30 playable ships, which is five more than the team committed to during the Kickstarter phase. Furthermore, Frontier plans to continue adding further polish, new content, plus the ability for players to get up out of their pilot seats and out of their starships post launch.
Elite: Dangerous was funded through a Kickstarter campaign, which started in November of 2012 with the goal of raising £1,250,000 ($2,000,000) in funding. By January 2013, Elite closed on £1,578,316 ($2,500,000).
