Blizzard is Dropping Battle.net Name

Blizzard announced that it's transitioning away from Battle.net in name and functionality, however the present infrastructure will remain in place.

Blizzard most likely figured out that gamers might panic upon hearing that Battle.net (a service which lets players to play games such as World of Warcraft, StarCraft 2, and Overwatch) was to be shut down, so they've decided to quickly explain that the change will ultimately have an impact on branding and future games, with existing Battle.net technologies remaining in place to serve gamers for past and present titles:

“We’re going to be transitioning away from using the Battle.net name for our gaming service and the functionality connected to it. Battle.net technology will continue to serve as the central nervous system for Blizzard games—nothing is changing in that regard.”

Blizzard went on and explained that transition away from the classic name is because of the fact when the service was first announced, having an online component as part of a video game was an unexpected feature and a novel concept, that's why the studio decided to emphasize the Battle.net identity to draw attention to this. Now that games have evolved to naturally include connectivity - be it with problematic DRM, multiplayer, or even just items like achievements - Blizzard feels that it no longer has to distinguish the online-focused technology with its own overarching branding.

As stated earlier, this will not affect games currently using the Battle.net technology. The hardware and services behind the platform will remain where they are, and on the gamer side of things it's only the name of Battle.net itself that's being changed. Blizzard is now going to name features using a more unified naming structure, like Blizzard Voice or Blizzard Streaming. It really makes sense on the branding front, and in the end it should make no difference for gamers as a whole, nostalgia factors aside.
