Two New Sonic Games Announced for 2017

Couple of new Sonic games were revealed by Sega at San Diego Comic-Con, with both of the titles scheduled to arrive in 2017 - and one confirmed for release on the Nintendo NX.

Even though Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most unforgettable gaming mascots of all time, latest games featuring the speedy mammal have not exactly impressed audiences.

Sonic BOOM was SEGA's disaster, unsuccessful both critically and commercially, and it was clear that the next version of the Sonic franchise had to be something special. As it seems, SEGA is actually ready to give the hedgehog two games in 2017.

The news were revealed by the publisher at its San Diego Comic-Con celebration party for the 25th anniversary of the character, and announced two Sonic titles in quick succession. Maybe the most ambitious of the two is an yet untitled new Sonic game, which looks to be comparable in scope to Sonic Generations. Developed by the team behind both Generations and Sonic Colors, SEGA hopes that the project manages to be as successful as those forerunners.

The game was revealed by SEGA courtesy of an initial trailer, which is available below. With a promise that when things look their darkest, even heroes need a helping hand, the trailer unveils at first a modern design for Sonic before establishing the 1990s classic design, related to the aforementioned Sonic Generations. The new project is going to be ready for release by holiday 2017, and is launching on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and the Nintendo NX.

Those interested in a more retro Sonic game may find more love for other title that SEGA introduced. Sonic Mania was showcased by the publisher at its party, and looks determined to bring back the same tone and feel as the original games. Developed by SEGA of America, PagodaWest Games, Christian Whitehead, and Simon Thomley, the title delivers fast-paced 2D platforming, as well as a trio of playable characters in the form of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. More info in the trailer below.
