Star Trek VR Game Delayed to 2017

Ubisoft has announced that the upcoming virtual reality game Star Trek: Bridge Crew will be delayed on PC and PS4 across HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and PlayStation VR.

Originally planned for release this holiday season, the launch of Star Trek: Bridge Crew has been pushed to March 14, 2017 by Ubisoft. No particular reason was given for the delay, except for Ubisoft's desire to "bring the best game experience possible at launch." This explanation makes it sound like Star Trek: Bridge Crew might stumble upon some development difficulties that will need ironed out before it is ready for the public, but right now, that's just speculation.

It also might be that Ubisoft is looking to include more content to Star Trek: Bridge Crew to expand the experience beyond just letting players to role-play on the Aegis starship. Although it would require a good deal more resources, perhaps the new plan is to let players to not only travel through space on a United Federation ship, but to also check out alien planets like in the show.

Even if Star Trek: Bridge Crew's delay doesn't add any extra content to the game, it still appears that it will be a solid experience for fans of the franchise. The E3 trailer for Bridge Crew was impressive, and there may be a way to sell skeptics on the potential of virtual reality. Nonetheless, if some of those skeptics decides to try Star Trek: Bridge Crew only to stumble upon some serious technical difficulties, like a constant need to adjust the VR hardware, it might break their immersion and confirm their concerns about virtual reality technology.

Taking all of this into consideration, delaying it may be the best thing to do. Ubisoft has an opportunity to capitalize on the Star Trek license, and with 2 million PlayStation VR units expected to be sold by the time the year comes to an end, there's a large market for it to target. Whether a delay for Star Trek: Bridge Crew means a more perfected experience, then it could turn out to be one of the most popular titles released in the early days of the virtual reality phenomenon.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew is going to be available on March 14th, 2017 for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR.
