Battleborn May Soon Become Free-to-Play
-----------Rumors of a free-to-play Battleborn are crushed, however Gearbox stated that a free version of the game might become available to play in the next couple of months.
According to an anonymous source reported on by Kotaku, first-person shooter Battleborn will be going free-to-play within the next few months. The announcement is said to arrive sometime in November, though the mysterious source claims that the move has already been postponed on more than one occasion, so this might change. Kotaku stated that Gearbox had originally wanted to make the game free right from the start, something that publisher 2K disagreed with, preferring to make the game into a standard $60 title.
Regardless of Kotaku's claim that their source has knowledge from the inside, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford is refusing that there are any plans to make the game free-to-play at all, dismissing the story as "reckless". Nonetheless, the developer did reveal that there are couple of unannounced plans to make a new, free version of the game, from which the full retail copy plus DLC can be purchased.
Making a game free in any regard may be considered a sign that the title is in trouble, but it's far from a death sentence for games. As a matter of fact, games such as Team Fotress 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic are good examples that hold a decent level of success, even after ditching their price tag. Evolve from 2K, which became free-to-play few months ago, saw a huge jump in player count and skyrocketed to the top of the Steam charts.
Even though the developer is popular for the well-known Borderlands series, it appears that the gamers would simply revisit Pandora instead of playing the new shooter, according to Steam statistics. Here's hoping that this new free version of Battleborn will help bring a fresh wave of players to the game, when it eventually gets released in few months down the line.
